Heartbreaking photo of disabled Indian boy tied to bus stop

"He can't talk, so how will he tell anyone if he gets lost?"
Mumbai (AFP) – The nine-year-old boy dressed in blue lay listlessly on the pavement in the scorching Mumbai summer afternoon, his ankle tethered with rope to a bus stop, unheeded by pedestrians strolling past.

Lakhan Kale cannot hear or speak and suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy, so his grandmother and carer tied him up to keep him safe while she went to work, selling toys and flower garlands on the city's roadsides. Read full story

That's cruel and unusual punishment by his own family. Wow , just when I thought that I had seen it all. God bless the children.

+Jendhamuni Sos s my dear friend , it is certainly very inhuman act by his grandmother or who ever they may be . On the other side being the sole bread winner of the family she has to earn a living every day too .
I am surprised enough that how did it escape eyes of a humorous NGOs working in the related sector . very unfortunate .

Poverty is a curse on society but when it mixes with disabilities it becomes more pathetic and sometimes it becomes dangerous. Before blaming government, social welfare trust, N.G.O, and other organisations, I find myself and people like me as guilty for not spending time and applying a little effort for them. Have a brighter day Jendhamuni Sos.

+bill k its not a Godless society. It is abject poverty and ignorance which is compelling his grandma to leave him tied to a post. If the kid has a fit every one in the vicinity will rush in to help. But all day they have to work for a single meal in the day.

+Linda Anne Not society. Definitely God. Circumstances are not under our control. God who is omniscient omnipotent and omnipresent should have made all people good and not planned suffering for anyone.

Me & Grandma

My Reflection

This site is a tribute to Buddhism. Buddhism has given me a tremendous inspiration to be who and where I am today. Although I came to America at a very young age, however, I never once forget who I am and where I came from. One thing I know for sure is I was born as a Buddhist, live as a Buddhist and will leave this earth as a Buddhist. I do not believe in superstition. I only believe in karma.

Tipitaka: The pali canon (Readings in Theravada Buddhism). A vast body of literature in English translation the texts add up to several thousand printed pages. Most -- but not all -- of the Canon has already been published in English over the years. Although only a small fraction of these texts are available here at Access to Insight, this collection can nonetheless be a very good place to start.
