South Korea ferry was routinely overloaded

INCHEON, South Korea (AP) — The doomed ferry Sewol exceeded its cargo limit on 246 trips — nearly every voyage it made in which it reported cargo — in the 13 months before it sank, according to documents that reveal the regulatory failures that allowed passengers by the hundreds to set off on an unsafe vessel. Yes the first mate is in charge when in port. Routinely they point their finger at the captain. Your article points this out correctly.

Im so sorry for the families that have lost someone in this accident and i will keep them in prayer. When a manufacturer sets a maximum weight and carry limit in their vessel, then that should never be exceeded. Ever!! Unfortunately, this is just another one of "those ferries" that they couldn't care less about safety and lets fill it till there is no standing room so we can make a bigger profit. Doesn't someone have a clicker?? 48, 49, 50! Wait for the next ferry please!! In the words of john pinette, "that was a 'nay nay ferry'".

Every public vessel, trains, ferries and such are routinely overloaded in most non first world countries. It stems from the government forgetting about infrastructure.
    Not news.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of the victims of the INCHEON disaster. I can only imagine in my darkest dreams what you have gone through. May God rest their souls.. Why the crew did not order an immediate evacuation is completely beyond comprehension. Please all who read this, if you are ever on a vessel this size and it lists dramatically get off immediately! Don't wait for the dumfounded crew to give the order. It is clear by the outcome that their concerns were not for the safety of the passengers but for their own a..es. Get to a lifeboat station quickly and if necessary take matters into your own hands. This incident sickens me! I hope that the families and friends can find peace and solace in these most difficult of times. You are not alone in your sorrow… Peace be with you.

Over loaded, operating in unsafe water conditions, in-experienced captian coerced into service, rampant bribery in nearly all levels of business/regulatory bodies, crew under criminal charges….the list goes. Living here, you get inundated with this….

My Reflection

This site is a tribute to Buddhism. Buddhism has given me a tremendous inspiration to be who and where I am today. Although I came to America at a very young age, however, I never once forget who I am and where I came from. One thing I know for sure is I was born as a Buddhist, live as a Buddhist and will leave this earth as a Buddhist. I do not believe in superstition. I only believe in karma.

Tipitaka: The pali canon (Readings in Theravada Buddhism). A vast body of literature in English translation the texts add up to several thousand printed pages. Most -- but not all -- of the Canon has already been published in English over the years. Although only a small fraction of these texts are available here at Access to Insight, this collection can nonetheless be a very good place to start.
