You never know how much you have

Abandoned by guardians and neglected by society
You will never know how much you have until you see how much these poor children from my homeland, Cambodia, don't have.

"Children sleeping rough are common sights in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, abandoned by guardians and neglected by society their biggest challenge is to survive the day and find somewhere safe to sleep at night"  ~School of Vice

These two boys remind me of two boys in my childhood.
Tai` is next door neighbor, he was one year older than me. One day I realized I didn't see him for a while and asked my mom. She said his stepmother kicked him out and he became dust of life like these boys. One day he came back to tell how he narrowly missed being crushed by the wall fallen by a run away train (which everybody knew about because it happened at center of the city). But he disappeared again, apparently the stepmother didn't change her mind.
Dong is another boy in another neighborhood north of mine, but I knew him for he's living with his uncle's family because his dad died in the war and his mom died of illness. His uncle and the wife were actually my parents' friends since they served in the same unit in the armed force about ten years before that time. One day I passed his house and saw him being made naked and pranked with rod by his uncle's wife. I was running errand, going much further north to tell the vendors what and how many units they should bring to my house in the evening (we didn't have phone, practically nobody there had phone then). when getting back at home I told my mom about Dong, she said let it cool down for few days then she will go up there to talk to them and bring him to my home. Several days later I checked with her and was told he left the house and became dust of life, she told the couple if he came back they bring him to her, but we never heard from him again.
They were 9 and 10 years old then.

My Reflection

This site is a tribute to Buddhism. Buddhism has given me a tremendous inspiration to be who and where I am today. Although I came to America at a very young age, however, I never once forget who I am and where I came from. One thing I know for sure is I was born as a Buddhist, live as a Buddhist and will leave this earth as a Buddhist. I do not believe in superstition. I only believe in karma.

Tipitaka: The pali canon (Readings in Theravada Buddhism). A vast body of literature in English translation the texts add up to several thousand printed pages. Most -- but not all -- of the Canon has already been published in English over the years. Although only a small fraction of these texts are available here at Access to Insight, this collection can nonetheless be a very good place to start.
