1. Sadness and Happiness

    147

Sadness gives depth. Happiness gives height. Sadness gives roots. Happiness gives branches. Happiness is like a tree going into the sky, and sadness is like the roots going down into the womb of the earth. Both are needed, and the higher a tree goes, the deeper it goes, simultaneously. The bigger the tree, the bigger will be its roots. In fact, it is always in proportion. That's its balance. ~Osho

Miniature Angkor Wat built by Cambodian refugees in Bataan, Philippines in 1984
I lived in Philippines around that year, on Luzon Island. Both of my grandmothers passed a way there and they both were buried next to each other. I love Luzon Island very much, especially the beautiful waterfall. And of course I miss Luzon and my grandmothers very much.

  3. When someone is crying

When someone is crying, of course, the noble thing to do is to comfort them. But if someone is trying to hide their tears, it may also be noble to pretend you do not notice them. ~Lemony Snicket
  4. A warm Heart

    40

Compassionate thought is the most precious thing there is. It is something that only we human beings can develop. And if we have a good heart, a warm heart, warm feelings, we will be happy and satisfied ourselves, and our friends will experience a friendly and peaceful atmosphere as well. This can be experienced community to community, country to country, continent to continent. ~ Dalai Lama
  5. Darkness and Light inside us

    263

There is darkness inside us all.
    It is true.
    Inside every human being,
There is a tremendous and powerful capacity to commit deeds of evil.
A force with the power to hurt others,
To further ourselves by stepping on the dreams of those around us.
    Inside everyone is this darkness,
And nobody is completely free from it.

But inside us all, there is also light.
And it is the darkness which allows the light to be seen.
    Without the capacity for darkness,
We would not have the capacity for light.

Now, there are times in all our lives,
When the darkness overpowers the light.
    Times where we forget,
    When all hope seems lost,
And we cannot break free from the darkness
As it encloses and imprisons us.

It is in times such as this,
That we must look to others.
In times when our own strength and will becomes insufficient,
    And we feel ourselves drowning
In the despair and pain and misery
That the darkness brings with it,
We must stand by each other.

For when the light of one person
Is not enough to drive the darkness away,
    We must grow our numbers.
    We must support our fellows,
    And share our light.
For only then can we be strong enough to be free.

    And when we are free,
    And strengthened by the people
    Who support us,
    It is only then
That we are strong enough to fulfill our own dreams.
This is the strength which man can gain from weakness.

Me & Grandma

My Reflection

This site is a tribute to Buddhism. Buddhism has given me a tremendous inspiration to be who and where I am today. Although I came to America at a very young age, however, I never once forget who I am and where I came from. One thing I know for sure is I was born as a Buddhist, live as a Buddhist and will leave this earth as a Buddhist. I do not believe in superstition. I only believe in karma.

Tipitaka: The pali canon (Readings in Theravada Buddhism). A vast body of literature in English translation the texts add up to several thousand printed pages. Most -- but not all -- of the Canon has already been published in English over the years. Although only a small fraction of these texts are available here at Access to Insight, this collection can nonetheless be a very good place to start.

Problems we face today

Of the many problems we face today, some are natural calamities and must be accepted and faced with equanimity. Others, however, are of our own making, created by misunderstanding, and can be corrected...
