1. Non-Duality

    The bell tolls at four in the morning.
    I stand by the window,
    barefoot on the cool floor.
    The garden is still dark.
    I wait for the mountains and rivers to reclaim their shapes.

    There is no light in the deepest hours of the night.
    Yet, I know you are there
    in the depth of the night,
    the immeasurable world of the mind.
    You, the known, have been there
    ever since the knower has been.

    The dawn will come soon,
    and you will see
    that you and the rosy horizon
    are within my two eyes.
    It is for me that the horizon is rosy
    and the sky blue.

    Looking at your image in the clear stream,
    you answer the question by your very presence.
    Life is humming the song of the non-dual marvel.
    I suddenly find myself smiling
    in the presence of this immaculate night.
    I know because I am here that you are there,
    and your being has returned to show itself
    in the wonder of tonight’s smile.

    In the quiet stream,
    I swim gently.
    The murmur of the water lulls my heart.
    A wave serves as a pillow
    I look up and see
    a white cloud against the blue sky,
    the sound of Autumn leaves,
    the fragrance of hay-
    each one a sign of eternity.
    A bright star helps me find my way back to myself.

    I know because you are there that I am here.
    The stretching arm of cognition
    in a lightning flash,
    joining together a million eons of distance,
    joining together birth and death,
    joining together the known and the knower.

    In the depth of the night,
    as in the immeasurable realm of consciousness,
    the garden of life and I
    remain each other’s objects.
    The flower of being is singing the song of emptiness.

    The night is still immaculate,
    but sounds and images from you
    have returned and fill the pure night.
    I feel their presence.
    By the window, with my bare feet on the cool floor,
    I know I am here
    for you to be.

  5. The energy of mindfulness

    Anger is… energy number one. By practicing mindful breathing or mindful walking, we generate the energy number two: the energy of mindfulness. We call it in Buddhist terms: mindfulness of anger. Mindfulness is always mindfulness of something. When you drink your water mindfully, that is called mindfulness of drinking. When you eat mindfully, that is called mindfulness of eating. When you breathe mindfully, in and out, that is called mindfulness of breathing. When you walk mindfully, it is called mindfulness of walking.

    So, when you recognize your anger, embrace your anger tenderly with that energy of mindfulness, it is called mindfulness of anger, mindfulness of despair, mindfulness of fear. We should be able to learn and help the young people to learn how to do it. It’s very important.

    The Buddha offers us very concrete and simple exercises in order to become mindful. The first exercise on mindful breathing is: Breathing in–I know I am breathing in. Breathing out–I know I am breathing out. You can reduce the length of the sentence to one word. In. Out. While you are breathing in, you just recognize that this is your in breath, and you use the word, in. And you are wholly concentrated on your in breath. Nothing else.

    You become your in breath. You’re not thinking of anything. You’re not thinking of the past, of the future, of your projects. You release everything. You just follow your in breath, and you become one with your in breath. And the energy of mindfulness is generated together with the energy of concentration. ~Thich Nhat Hanh

  6. We can do something for peace every day

    Peace is not something we can only hope for. Peace is something we can contemplate in our daily life by our practice of mindful breathing, mindful walking, embracing our fear, our anger, producing the energy of understanding and compassion. And with that element of peace in us, we should be able to support our government, our Congress.

    And let us remember that peace is in our hands. We can do something for peace every day. Let us practice as individuals. Let us practice as communities, as Sanghas, and let us give peace a chance. ~Thich Nhat Hanh

  7. Not a battle to be fought

    Dealing with our overweight – or with any of our life’s difficulties, for that matter – is not a battle to be fought. Instead, we must learn how to make friends with our hardships and challenges. They are there to help us; they are natural opportunities for deeper understanding and transformation, brining us more joy and peace as we learn to work with them. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh

  8. Every moment of your daily life

    When you are a young person, you are like a young creek, and you meet many rocks, many obstacles and difficulties on your way. You hurry to get past these obstacles and get to the ocean. But as the creek moves down through the fields, it becomes larger and calmer and it can enjoy the reflection of the sky. It’s wonderful. You will arrive at the sea anyway so enjoy the journey. Enjoy the sunshine, the sunset, the moon, the birds, the trees, and the many beauties along the way. Taste every moment of your daily life. ~Thich Nhat Hanh

  9. The river is immense

    If you pour a handful of salt into a cup of water, the water becomes undrinkable. But if you pour the salt into a river, people can continue to draw the water to cook, wash, and drink. The river is immense, and it has the capacity to receive, embrace, and transform. When our hearts are small, our understanding and compassion are limited, and we suffer. We can’t accept or tolerate others and their shortcomings, and we demand that they change. But when our hearts expand, these same things don’t make us suffer anymore. We have a lot of understanding and compassion and can embrace others. We accept others as they are, and then they have a chance to transform. ~Thich Nhat Hanh

  10. Touching the Earth

    The practice of Touching the Earth is to return to the Earth, to our roots, to our ancestors, and to recognize that we are not alone but connected to a whole stream of spiritual and blood ancestors. We are their continuation and with them, will continue into the future generations. We touch the earth to let go of the idea that we are separate and to remind us that we are the Earth and part of Life.

    When we touch the Earth we become small, with the humility and simplicity of a young child. When we touch the Earth we become great, like an ancient tree sending her roots deep into the earth, drinking from the source of all waters. When we touch the Earth, we breathe in all the strength and stability of the Earth, and breathe out our suffering- our feelings of anger, hatred, fear, inadequacy and grief.

    Our hands join to form a lotus bud and we gently lower ourselves to the ground so that all four limbs and our forehead are resting comfortably on the floor. While we are Touching the Earth we turn our palms face up, showing our openness to the three jewels, the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. After one or two times practicing Touching the Earth (Three Touchings or Five Touchings), we can already release a lot of our suffering and feeling of alienation and reconcile with our ancestors, parents, children, or friends. ~Thich Nhat Hanh

My Reflection

This site is a tribute to Buddhism. Buddhism has given me a tremendous inspiration to be who and where I am today. Although I came to America at a very young age, however, I never once forget who I am and where I came from. One thing I know for sure is I was born as a Buddhist, live as a Buddhist and will leave this earth as a Buddhist. I do not believe in superstition. I only believe in karma.
